By her own admission, Jeanette Sanders is an adventurous eater and cook. But when it comes to the Iceberg Wedge Salad (updated or “loaded” or not), she’s just not buying it! Here’s what she had to say when this updated classic recipe ran in The Dallas Morning News recently in our Desperation Dinners column:
“I am interested in new ideas. I look for creative suggestions in your articles as well as others. When it comes to today's article, I'm sorry girls but I have to disagree. I consider myself an extremely flexible individual, however, in the case of the wedge (wedgie) salad - it sucks - I recall the first time I experienced that style of salad in a restaurant:
"The waiter sat it in front of me and I had to ask him what it was and are they too lazy to make a real salad?"
"I sent it back to be made into a recognizable traditional salad I know and love. Each time I see it, even in a picture or a suggestion, it makes me crazy. I love the salads I make and the salad I am accustomed to in the far and recent past. I wish this wedgie would go away!"
Gotta admit, this email gave us a good laugh! We just love it when people get passionate about recipes –- no matter which side of the recipe card the comments fall on. (So long as we all remain civil, right?!)
So we answered Jeanette right away acknowledging that the Iceberg Wedge Salad does indeed inspire passion. And after her note, we’re seriously considering starting a 12-Step. Wedgies Anonymous anyone?

I agree! This kind of retro I can do without. What's next - a bread basket filled with squishy Wonderbread? Ugh!

Actually I would not suggest an icebery wedge for a black tie dinner. I think a spring salad mix with baby spinach leaves works best. With a light dressing, cherry tomatoes, pecans and goat cheese. But, you can make a wedge with blue cheese dressing as that is the classic for iceberg. Or if you hate blue cheese, have a good ranch dressing. it is just a bit messier for black tie.Breadman breadmakers

Aah shoot. A wedge was something I grew up with - of course I'm well up in years. I used to serve it to my husband when we were first married and we both enjoyed it. Gotta admit, even 50+ years later, I still enjoy it now and then. Guess one shouldn't knock it if you haven't tried it. You can add whatever extras sprinkled across the top that pleases you. Enjoy ....

We only indulge in the classic iceberg wedge salad at a “nice” steakhouse. But how easy is that salad? If served it with bacon, tomatoes and hard cooked egg, it morphs into dinner.

Here's a question about the Iceberg Wedge salad via email...Can anyone help? We're not sure on this one... Whenever I've had this at a restaurant....or had the lettuce wraps...the lettuce is so very crisp and cold. Is there a secret to that? Thanks, BJ
