Featured Recipe: Cuban Picadillo
From Beverly: I don’t love change, whether it’s tweaking holiday recipes or moving across the country. I’m now in urban Washington, in a condo with my husband and the dog. My kids are flying solo, and Desperation Dinners at my house aren’t nearly so desperate anymore.
So change is here, and I’m forging ahead. Today marks my final Desperation Dinners column, and I’m so thankful for you, our readers, for allowing me to share recipes and stories over the years. My memories are many, and letters saying “you gals saved my marriage” are right at the top. You know who you are!
Fortunately change comes easily to Alicia, and she has some exciting news for this column and the all-new Kitchen Scoop website. So, I leave you with gratitude and a lot to look forward to. The column and website will continue with Alicia’s amazing recipes and photographs, kitchen advice, and reflections on culinary travel and life. Certain things shouldn’t change!
From Alicia: It’s only fitting that the recipe for Beverly’s farewell is an updated version of the first recipe we shared when we started Desperation Dinners more than 18 years ago. It’s a savory food memory that is worth repeating. Next week the column will have a new name, Kitchen Scoop to match the website for this new season of life. Look for Kitchen Scoop in the same place next week with all the same great recipes you’ve come to expect and as always, the recipes and columns will be here, on the web, as well.

Your cookbooks didn't save my marriage as I was already divorced when I found the first (and then the others) but I have loved them just the same.
Never read the column. Have bought many copies of various books over the years to give to friends, new moms and otherwise, and my sister as well. In fact, she just emailed me to say she'd made your Southern Broccoli Casserole from DD Entertaining for dinner the other night and noted she'd penciled in she'd first cooked it for our Christmas dinner in 2007. I will continue to enjoy the Kitchen Scoop I'm sure. Thanks to both of you for sharing delicious, fast and healthy recipes.

Thanks for the kind words you guys! I will continue to follow all of the new developments with Kitchen Scoop, too. And for the record, I almost always cook out of one of the 3 "desperate" cookbooks. Mine are falling apart. Guess I should treat myself to some new ones! Cheers to all! Beverly

Good luck, Beverly. Good luck to you too, Alicia, and thank you for continuing the column. I'll never forget your quick response to my question about where to obtain clam base. Our local grocer carried it when your column appeared featuring clam chowder. Later, I could not find it anywhere in the region. You suggested ordering from Amazon which I did. Thank you.

I want you to know that the Picadillo recipe is one of the first ones I ever made from my DD book. It's still a favorite & in regular rotation in our menu! Beverly, I wish you well on the next step in your journey & Alicia, I'm looking forward to riding along with you as I desperately try to come up with dinner!

Beverly and Alicia - My kitchen bookshelf is filled with dog-eared, stained, much-loved copies of your cookbooks, as well as many print-outs of your recipes. Thanks for being such an inspiration! Beverly, I wish you all the best and Alicia, I'm glad Kitchen Scoop will live on!

A little sad to read this, but it's tempered with understanding--I know what you mean, and I am proud of anyone who has the courage to make a change, when it is clear that change is the right way to go! I've never had a newspaper with your columns--it has always been the Desperation Cookbooks, and this website. So, the cookbooks we still have, and I'm glad the website will continue. Best of luck to you, Beverly--and Happy Trails in your next adventure(s). and: Thanks for keeping up the website, Alicia! I'm looking forward to see what's next!
