Clean Up—Quick!

If you’ve ever caught yourself choosing a recipe not by how it tastes but by whether it destroys the kitchen, we understand completely. We'd love to hear some of your favorite tips for making cleanup a breeze. To get the ideas flowing, here are a few of ours:

Peel vegetables over a paper towel or directly over the trash can. The same goes for seeding green peppers. If you use the paper towel, with a couple folds and swipes, the trimmings are history.

Gently drape a paper towel over food being heated in the microwave to prevent a host of determined splatters.

Line the bottom of the toaster oven with aluminum foil to catch drippy cheese and butter. (Change the foil as needed.) Or when roasting meat and you're not planning to make gravy, line the pan with foil and just throw away those baked on juices.

Read through a recipe before cooking to see if there are any needless dishes or pots and pans used. Why wash more than necessary?

Serve from the stove, right out of the pans. Unless it’s Thanksgiving, of course.

We recommend one simple rule "clean up as you go". It keeps you organized and on task with each step of a recipe. Being that we're roommates, we find this to be incredibly essential, after all, less mess equals less stress!

I have to be honest, as much as I would never start her fan club - that whole Rachael Ray garbage bowl concept came in handy recently when I was without a garbage disposal (I chop everything by the sink and shove all scraps into the disposal). Also I like to take out all the ingredients I'll be using that don't require refrigeration and have them in one area - the better organization I have at the onset of cooking the more likely I am to not be frenzied and leave a mess. And of course, as much as I don't love to - clean as you go is a standard in my kitchen.
