Does anybody still have dinner parties anymore?
It seems like people don’t have actual dinner parties anymore – you know the kind where people sit around a table and a plate of coordinated food is served. We have some ideas about why – and whether this is even true -- but we’d love to hear your opinion! Are you giving any dinner parties this holiday season? Have you been invited to any? What did you serve or eat?
Just in case you’re planning an old-fashioned soiree such as this, here’s a recipe we like called Cranberry-Pineapple Stuffed Chicken Breasts. Chicken is sometimes overlooked as being too ordinary for party menus. But in this age of stretched budgets, special diets, allergies and general food phobias, chicken can be dressed up to become a delightful option for all-purpose entertaining.
Cranberry-Pineapple Stuffed Chicken Breasts is elegant and sophisticated. But it’s also easy -- ready for the oven with just 15 minutes of preparation thanks to a “stuffing” of spreadable cheese, store-bought cranberry relish and crushed pineapple.

I had a party. People ate dinner. I guess that makes it a dinner party. I lit candles and cooked a standing rib - does that count?

I think supper clubs are the new dinner parties.
My son’s about a year old now. Before he was born, we LOVED dinner parties. Casual weeknights with neighborhood friends, and slightly more elaborate ones on the weekends. Not TOO elaborate - maybe 3-4 side dishes, instead of 1-2. Or people would bring stuff, potluck-style. If it helps, we’re in the DC area. Maybe it’s an urban thing? I can’t wait to get back into cooking for entertaining and I’m thinking about planning a dinner party for end-of-January!
Hi DLisa! You’re an inspiration. Early January is a great time to have folks over, once the holidays are out of the picture and people get bored. Maybe I’ll plan one too!
