Making a lattice top for an apple pie is really easy! I promise. After placing the first crust in the dish and pressing into the edges of the dish, fill the crust with prepared apples. Then, simply roll out the second crust. Slice it into 3/4-inch strips.

Take every other strip and lay them over the apples, about 1/2 inch apart. Alternate weaving the remaining strips, one at a time until the lattice work is finished. Think those woven pot holders we did as kids.

Repair any cracks or breaks in the crusts. Crimp the edges and then it’s ready to bake.

40 minutes later, serve with vanilla ice cream! Yum!

via email: I made the "All-American Apple Pie" this morning, with a couple of changes -- used 1/4 c brown sugar and 1/2 c white sugar -- also brushed the top pie crust with milk and sprinkled it heavily with sugar -- something I learned years ago from my grandmother -- gives the crust a wonderful crunchy texture. Always enjoy your recipes -- Patty Jenkins

Sounds amazing Patty! I will certainly give it a try! My grandmother used to sprinkle her pie tops with sugar, too and I had completely forgotten about that until you wrote...Thank you!

I am making a mixed berry pie and the recipe calls for a lattice crust. The problem is I absolutely suck at making lattice crusts! Is it crucial to the finished pie or can I just use a regular top crust.

A lattice crust is not crucial, but helpful for the pies that call for it. Try it first by just lying the strips in a check board fashion, then you can work up to the weaving. And remember, your mouth and stomach don't care! Enjoy!
