My search for grits in Seattle

Do you ever crave a taste of home when you’re traveling? I usually crave a breakfast comfort food. And for me that’s grits. Even when I eat out for breakfast here at home, I order grits if they’re on the menu.

The best grits out in a restaurant, (of course, mine at home are the best), are found at the Farmer’s Market Restaurant adjacent to the State Farmer’s Market here in Raleigh, N.C. Breakfast is served all day, so they’ve always got a big pot of grits on simmer.

Finding my favorite breakfast food is not so easy in Seattle -- a city known for Pacific Northwest seafood -- but grits? Not so much.

When I “yelped” grits on a recent trip out West, every concoction of “grits” you can think of came up. But good-old creamy grits with crispy bacon and lightly scrambled eggs, that’s what this southern girl was craving.

Then I spotted just what I knew would be the answer: an old-fashioned diner with the perfect name: The Silver Fork. I knew I’d find great grits here, at least I hoped I would….

I was not disappointed, and the atmosphere was perfect -- big booths that swallow you up, the clatter of dishes and the chat of fellow dinners enjoying their food. Of course there was the ultra-friendly wait-staff bustling through the busy restaurant, filling your coffee cup every time they passed by. Surprisingly, it felt just like home.

When and if I find myself back in Seattle and need to feel the comfort of warm, creamy grits, I’ll be heading back to The Silver Fork.

What comfort foods do you crave on your travels?
