Small Appliances

Not to clutter up your countertops, but certain small appliances more than pull their weight on busy nights.

Immersion Blender By Cuisinart

Hand-held blenders -- also called immersion blenders or stick blenders -- save time and cleanup by letting you puree soups right in the pot. (Byron's Broccoli Cheese Soup is just one example.) This one is in a mid-price range, but other brands work, too.

Rival 6-Quart Smart-Pot Programmable Slow Cooker

We test all of our recipes in Rival brand Crock Pots and find the 6-quart model works for almost everything. Being able to make Alicia's Risotto with Gourmet Mushrooms or Beverly's Scrumptious Beef Stew alone are worth having one.

Must-have Tools

These handy, inexpensive gadgets will make cooking a lot easier.

Mojito Muddler

Whip up a Mojito in no time using this stainless muddler.

Shrimp Peeler/ Deveiner

Makes quick work of peeling and deveining shrimp. For other alternatives, check our buying shrimp blog post.

Microplane Coarse Grater

Ever struggled to get perfect zest off a lemon? Not anymore…

Lemon Reamer

Get all the juice without all the cleanup.

Hamburger Press

Makes perfect patties every time, especially when you get big packs of beef on sale!

The Basics (Equipment)

Some kitchen equipment is standard operating procedure for us. Here are a couple of basics for starters.

Nonstick Skillet

About half the recipes in the Desperation Dinners and Cheap. Fast. Good! cookbooks are made in a skillet like this. For more information, check out our blog.

Cast Iron Skillet

When you need one, you need one! Browns like a dream.

Specialty Foods and Other Stuff

Sometimes supermarkets are slow to stock specialty ingredients. Who knows why, but these are must-haves for certain recipes.

Arborio Rice

Arborio is the only rice that gives you the creamy wonderful texture in risotto.

Chipotle Mini Cubes

Quick alternative to reconstituting dried chilies. Perfect for Tex-Mex and especially our Copycat Chipotle Chicken.

Clam Base

Can't make Almost Dad's Clam Chowder in 20 minutes without clam base.

Burt's Bees Coconut Foot Creme

Yes it's for your feet, but Beverly swears by it! Read all about it on her blog.

Fan Fare

Debbie's cookbook guide to everything you need to know about tailgating.

Microwave Gourmet

Our recipe for Risotto with Ham and Asparagus will convince you the microwave isn't just for leftovers any more. You heard it first from Barbara over two decades ago.

The Well-Filled Microwave Cookbook

In our Humble Opinion, making the most of your microwave means making risotto, and this book has four more recipes for how to do just that!

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook

Okay, so this is the cookbook to turn to for alternative ways to do risotto in a Crock Pot. But it's a book we turn to over and over for lots of ideas. Way more than stews!

Desperation Dinners

Our first cookbook, and we're still using it night after night. Full of great 20-minute meals, well, we think so, and so do lots of others here on The Scoop.

Desperation Entertaining

Our second cookbook. If we had it to do over again, we'd name this "Entertain Anyway" or maybe "Just Get On With It." Either way, it's tips and recipes for entertaining that are fast but don't taste like it.

Cheap. Fast. Good!

True, this is our third cookbook but it's so much more than that. In addition to 275 budget recipes, CFG is a common-sense guide on how to save money in the kitchen without killing yourself. Start small or start big, it's up to you.
